Reality show rebuke leads to paralysis of teen girl

Parents are excited at the idea of having their kids on reality shows. Most of them force their shy and sensitive children to get on these shows for fame and the huge prizes offered. There are scores of these shows going on at both national and state levels but the bitter reality of these shows proved to be fatal for one of the participants.

Shinjini Sengupta from Kolkata, West Bengal, is a regular 16 year old girl. Suddenly the class XI student lost her speech and moving abilities. Till a month back she was an excellent dancer and was also acting in tele serials and had a small role in a Bengali movie. While taking part in a reality dance competition on a Bengali TV channel she was rebuked by some of the judges during a May 19th shoot. After that incident the teenager was never able to get over the shock of being insulted in front of public. Shinjini gradually got into depression and lost her ability to speak and the movement of her limbs. She had to be flown to NIMHANS in Bangalore to get her problem diagnosed.

But even there the doctors were not able to understand the cause of these problems. She was unable to express herself and after MRI and CT scan they were quite unsure if her problem was mainly medical or psychological. Earlier she was able to write if she needed something but gradually that also stopped. After being consulted with psychiatrists it was diagnosed that her problem was not a rare one. Depression was the cause of her physical malfunctions and vulnerability.

It was concluded that after being chided by the judges Shinjini did not cry or break down. On her way back home she also said she felt like singing aloud. She added that she had tried hard not to cry and hold back tears. But the teenager never recovered from the trauma. She stared eating less and slept more. During a shoot she was unable to deliver her dialogues when her parents realised that there was some major medical problem. Shinjini refused to watch the episodes of the dance program and her condition worsened. Unfortunately most parents fail to understand that the trauma which their children have to go through when criticised in front of cameras. Stronger ones sustain but the sensitive ones like Shinjini take it to their hearts and suffer from depression.
